Amplats officials accused of payment system abuse
Certain officials at Anglo American Platinum’s (Amplats’) Khuseleka mine, which consists of the Khuseleka 1 and Khuseleka 2 shafts, near Rustenburg, in the North West, are allegedly obtaining money from the company illegally through the mine’s voucher payment system, an anonymous source tells Mining Weekly.
These vouchers, which can be exchanged for cash, are used to pay employees immediately for work done at the mine on Saturdays and public holidays.
The source states that an official prints extra vouchers for himself for work that he did not do and that other employees are also suspected to be involved.
According to the anonymous source, workers had stopped production on more than one occasion to plead with management to deal with the official in question, but to no avail.
Amplats tells Mining Weekly that “this is the first time that the problem is brought to our attention and that the company is looking into it through the internal processes”.
Further, another Amplats employee has allegedly made a case against the official about the issue. Amplats neither confirmed nor denied this, but told Mining Weekly that protection services conducted an investigation and audit but that no irregularities emerged.
