Midas Gold adds US Forest Service to lawsuit
Midas Gold, which is seeking approval to mine for gold in Idaho, has added the US Forest Service (USFS) as a party in a lawsuit over water quality concerns near its Stibnite gold project site.
Midas Gold is being sued by the Nez Perce Tribe, but the Canadian company contends that the water quality concerns stemmed from activities that occurred decades ago – before the company existed.
In a statement by Midas Gold Idaho CEO Laurel Sayer, the company stated that it had never mined at any of the locations where the Nez Perce Tribe had identified water quality issues. It also said that some of the specific environmental issues mentioned in the lawsuit had taken place on land owned and managed by the USFS, including areas outside the proposed Stibnite project footprint.
Midas Gold “reluctantly” took steps to add the USFS as a party to the tribe’s lawsuit, Sayer said, adding that it had notified the USFS in June of the possibility of this action.
“. . . over two years now, we have worked tirelessly with them and other regulators on an approach that could have led to real action on the ground and avoided today’s action entirely. We have been in close contact with the US Forest Service throughout this process and, with the litigation deadlines looming, this action was a necessary step to protect Midas Gold from being held responsible for alleged water pollution from lands owned and managed by the US Forest Service,” she said.
The Stibnite project is currently in the permitting stage. A draft environmental impact statement was recently released and is open for public comment for 60 days.
Midas Gold said earlier this week that the project had strong support in Idaho, despite the tribe’s lawsuit.
If developed, Stibnite would be a $1-billion construction investment, providing 500 direct jobs.
