Mid-torque impact wrench for vehicle wheels

An impact wrench uses both rotational force, or torque, and short-burst concussive blows, or impacts, to tighten and loosen bolts, nuts and screws.

Recently, Tyremart trialed the Milwaukee M18 Fuel ½" mid-torque impact wrench at some of its outlets. The wrenches were used to loosen the bolts on vehicle wheels, while spanners were used to replace bolts, to ensure that the correct torque pressure was achieved.

The company found that the impact wrenches significantly increased turnaround time for loosening vehicle wheels. “Whereas it used to take a technician about 15 minutes to loosen a wheel by hand, the process has now been reduced to a mere five minutes, which is a third of the total time,” says Tyremart Fourways branch manager Martin Fourie.

The wrench is cordless, reducing potential hazards such as unsafe electrical connections and tripping over extension cords. It is quieter than traditional air tools and features extended-use battery technology. It delivers 610 Nm of fastening torque and its shorter, lighter design aids ease of use and manoeuvrability.

The wrench is fitted with a Powerstate brushless motor, which delivers up to 2 400 rpm and the Redlink Plus Intelligence electronic system, designed to prevent potential damage caused by overloading or overheating. If used with Redlithium compact batteries or extended capacity batteries, which are sold separately, the wrench is able to deliver more work per charge and more work over the life of the battery pack.

The three-mode Drive Control aims to provide greater control over output speed and power. A ½" friction ring anvil allows for tool-free socket changes and the new overmould material promises longer-lasting comfort and protection.

The trial was conducted over the December holiday period, traditionally the company’s busiest time. Most branches received a single mid-torque impact wrench to trial, while the two busiest branches each trialed two wrenches.

Fourie concludes that the trial was a resounding success, with improved response times and no maintenance problems with any tool during the trial period. “The fact that Milwaukee also provides an extensive guarantee, backed up by comprehensive technical support, gives us peace of mind as to the quality and dependability of the tools.”
