Water and Sanitation Minister Senzo Mchunu, along with Deputy Ministers Dikeledi Magadzi and David Mahlobo, this week met with the executive mayors of the Gauteng province.

Among those present was the Tshwane mayor Randall Williams, MMC Phillip Nel and executive members of the Rand Water board.

In its presentation, the City of Tshwane pointed out that it was responsible for its own wastewater treatment and conceded that most of the wastewater treatment plants in its control have been malfunctioning since 2010.

The parties have agreed that, going forward, the City of Tshwane will attend to the finalisation of a dedicated pipeline for Laudium to resolve the intermittent water supply challenges; that the upgrading of the Rooiwal wastewater treatment plant will be accelerated; and that the City of Tshwane will work with Rand Water to ensure the continued supply of water to residents in Tshwane.

Further, it was also agreed that the various metropolitan municipalities in the province will work together to deal with the current water supply challenges in Gauteng.
