World leaders in innovative sinusoidal pumps, the Watson-Marlow Pumps Group offers the most simple, reliable and gentle pumping solutions for the food and beverage industries. "Our low-shear MasoSine sinusoidal pumps maintain the integrity of whole food products and handle highly viscous products up to 1 million cP with ease," says Watson-Marlow Bredel SA general manager Nico van Schalkwyk. "Additionally, they are capable of pumping high viscosity and large particulates without damage – making them the perfect pumps for fragile cheese curd, stews, batters, syrups, whole fruit and vegetables, meat and poultry, and juice concentrate," he adds.

A recent success story has been the integration of two MasoSine EC25 pump heads into a flexible pouch packaging machine designed for transferring béchamel sauce. Strict hygiene controls and gentle product handling were the main priorities of the packaging machine manufacturers, and the pumps now gently convey the sauce to dosing nozzles without mixing or shearing the product. "MasoSine pumps do not have any valves, and their four chambers are sealed, making them ideal for fluids containing fragile pieces or particles such as sauces and soups," van Schalkwyk explains. The compact EcoSine EC25 pump maintains integrity thanks to its sinusoidal rotor which does not shear the product. In fact the rotor, in the form of a sine wave, creates four moving chambers that gently transfer the fluid from the suction side to the discharge side without any variations in volume.

MasoSine pumps are the result of 30 years of engineering innovation and product development. The pump’s exclusive sinusoidal rotor overcomes the limitations of conventional rotary lobe pumps to produce powerful suction with low shear, low pulsation and gentle handling. It also boasts 3A certification for sanitary applications. "With a single shaft and rotor, there is no need for the complex timing gears and multiple seals associated with conventional rotary lobe pumps. One rotor, one shaft and one seal equate to simple and economic maintenance," says van Schalkwyk. "It is capable of being cleaned-in-place (CIP) and various CIP modifications are available depending upon the product being pumped and the cleaning protocol used. Maintenance is also straightforward. It takes less than 10 minutes to dismantle an EcoSine pump for inspection or to replace parts – which keeps downtime to a minimum," he concludes.
