Gauteng-based Marthinusen & Coutts offers aftermarket services throughout Africa, covering the repair and maintenance of electric motors and components.

The products included in this round-the-clock service are small and large alternating current (ac) and direct current (dc) motors, flameproof motors, traction motors and power generators of up to 980 MW. The service includes customised manufacture and design, on-site engineering services and motor management solutions that complement the repair business.

A division of Atcom, Marthinusen & Coutts was established in 1954. The ISO 9001:2000-, SABS 60079-0/1- and SABS 60079-15-accredited company’s premises at 53 Hospital street, in Cleveland, Johannesburg, include a 9 500 m2 factory equipped with test bays, test equipment, balancing machines and vacuum pressure impregnation tanks, besides others.

The main input materials used by the 370-employee company include, steel, copper, insulating tapings and resins.
Marthinusen & Coutts’ recent major contracts include the refurbishment of four 30 MW turbines for Namibian electricity utility Nampower, the on-site repair of an 8 260 kW winder motor for Zambia’s Konkola Copper Mines, the rehabilitation and repair of a 70 MW synchronous condenser for the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) electricity utility Snel, the installations of four wrap-around machines at First Quantum Minerals’ Sentinel mine, in Zambia, and the rewinding of a 27 MW generator stator and rotor at Nzilo, in the DRC.
