Tsogo Sun’s Southern Sun Maputo has reopened after a four-month hiatus, during which the hotel underwent a $30-million expansion and makeover.

The project entailed the addition of 111 rooms, a 120-seat conference centre and the expansion of the restaurant, lobby and back-of-house facilities, in addition to the refurbishment of the existing 158 rooms and public areas.

The expansion also included the addition of two meeting rooms and a business centre to service the hotel’s growing complement of business travellers.

Tsogo Sun said on Friday that its investment in Mozambique was in line with the country’s robust gross domestic product growth and a progressive increase in the implementation of large-scale infrastructure projects.

“It makes sense to embrace the opportunities and invest in Mozambique, with its growing economy, as well as its attractiveness to South Africans [and] international travellers,” commented Tsogo Sun COO Richard Weilers.

“Southern Sun Maputo has benefitted from a strong trading performance and we believe this expansion and refurbishment programme, together with its location as the only Maputo hotel on the beach, will cement it as the destination hotel of choice in the city.”

The hotel upgrade included the addition of an imported beach-cleaning machine, which cleaned the beach on a daily basis, ensuring that it remained pristine for hotel guests.

“We’re not just taking ownership of the hotel, but of the beach as well, which we believe falls under our care. We obtained authorisation from the municipal authorities, who were very supportive of our efforts,” Weilers said
