Making The Pieces Fit For A Career In Construction

Company Announcement - Kevin Bates Albert Carpets, a member of Master Builders Association North, staged an innovative display at the recent Youth in Construction Gauteng Expo 2015 at the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre in Newtown, Johannesburg. Hannetjie Smit and Lesley Fidrmuc, Sales Consultants at the KBAC offices in Johannesburg, devised the idea of creating a floor jigsaw puzzle consisting of segments of Interface carpet tiles, for which KBAC is the sole South African distributor.
The puzzle pieces - of varying shapes and colours - were then jumbled up and teams of the visiting Secondary School pupils challenged to match the segments and arrange them back to the original pattern in just two minutes. The teams were guided by a drawing of the original pattern and staff of the Sparrow FET College were on hand to put the enthusiastic children through their paces. Sparrow FET, based in Sophiatown, provides training for the CETA-accredited Installation of Floor Coverings NQF Level 1.
Youth in Construction is an annual initiative to expose secondary school learners to the many career possibilities in the construction, civil engineering and built environment sectors. The project was introduced in 2008 and is coordinated by the Master Builders associations, SA Forum of Civil Engineering Contractors, SA Institution of Civil Engineers and Consulting Engineers South Africa in the various provinces of South Africa. KBAC was one of the first flooring companies in SA to initiate a formal CETA-accredited training programme which led to CETA project funding and the formation of the Flooring Industry Training Association.
