Worldwide scientific research into the coronavirus and a greater understanding of how the virus transmits, continues to unfold. Research suggests that Covid-19 may remain on various surfaces for prolonged periods of time and may be transmitted by means of touch.

A newly developed anti-microbial film designed to prevent the spread of Covid-19 on surfaces, was recently launched to the South African market by HygieneZone.

The company explains that viruses such as the coronavirus and bacteria such as salmonella and listeria, may attach to every-day surfaces. These microbes can then be spread when a person touches the surfaces and transmits them to their own nose or mouth or passes them on to others.

HygieneZone states that its anti-microbial film kills up to 99% of harmful bacteria and has been proven to be effective against the coronavirus. The anti-microbial film was developed by Hexis Health in France and has been tested in medical environments around the world.

The film can be applied to almost any surface and is particularly suitable for high-touch zones such as door handles, gym equipment, shared workspaces, restaurant tables and shopping trolleys. Surfaces can be wrapped or covered with the transparent and invisible film, which then acts as a layer of protection, preventing contamination of the surface.

HygieneZone believes that using its anti-microbial film to protect surfaces in public spaces may help people to feel safer and more reassured when visiting shopping centres, restaurants, gyms, hospitals and other public spaces, leading to a faster return to economic activity.

Shared workspaces, such as staff kitchens, food preparation surfaces, bathrooms and desks or any areas where employees congregate are at high risk of surface contamination by bacteria and viruses, explains the company. Ensuring that these surfaces are protected from contamination may lead to employee peace of mind, encouraging a return to the work place and improved productivity.

The company further states that its anti-microbial film is designed to remain effective for up to 5 years. In addition, it is seen as a cost-saver as it reduces the need for expensive sanitising cleaning solutions and requires only routine surface cleaning.
