Mazda South Africa recalls 19 000 vehicles over potentially defective airbags
Vehicle manufacturer Mazda South Africa is recalling up to 19 000 Mazda2, Mazda6 and RX-8 vehicles in South Africa as a formal global recall over possible defective airbags is extended.
Owners of 2003 and newer models of Mazda2, Mazda6 and RX-8 vehicles with VIN numbers starting with MM6DE, JM6GG and JMZSE have been urged to approach Madza dealers to have the driver-side air bag and/or passenger-side air bag inflator replaced with an improved unit.
The company on Monday announced the local safety recall following investigative recalls by Mazda in Japan and North America for three different types of Takata Corporation-manufactured airbag inflators.
The recalled models are those equipped with the PSDI-4 driver-side airbag inflator, the SDI-160 driver-side airbag inflator, or the SPI, SDI-230 and the PSPI passenger-side airbag inflators.
“The recall is owing to an inappropriate production condition and storage of the propellant in the inflator,” Mazda explained, noting that the airbag may not deploy as designed owing to the faulty airbag inflators.
However, while Mazda assured that “no cases of abnormal deployment or dangerous flaws” had been recorded in any Mazda vehicles during the course of its investigative recall, the potential concern had “deemed an extended formal recall campaign necessary”.
