Project Description
The project is geared towards the establishment of an export energy carrier value chain between the Port of Sines and north-west European destinations.
The project will use renewable energy and 500 MW of electrolysis capacity to produce 50 000 t/y of green hydrogen and up to 500 000 t/y of green ammonia. The plant will displace up to 600 000 t/y of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in this initial phase.
The consortium members are exploring opportunities with stakeholders to further expand the project to potentially produce one-million tonnes a year of green ammonia, reducing CO2 emissions by up to one-million tonnes a year.
Potential Job Creation
The project is expected to create more than 200 direct and indirect jobs.
Capital Expenditure
The project entails an investment of more than €1-billion.
Planned Start/End Date
The project is expected to be fully permitted and ready for a final investment decision by the end of 2023, whereafter construction will start.
First hydrogen production is expected to take place by 2025.
Subsequent phases will start development in 2024, with full commissioning before 2030.
