The BMW X3 has been crowned as the Car of the Year 2025 by a jury from the South African Guild of Mobility Journalists.

The competition is sponsored by Old Mutual Insure.

What makes this year’s win special is that the X3 is produced in Pretoria for the local and export markets.

This year’s Car of the Year title is the second in as many years for BMW Group South Africa, with the 7 Series taking top honours last year.

BMW also took third spot in this year’s competition, with the new M5 the bronze medal winner.

Japanese importer Suzuki’s new Swift hatchback secured the runner-up spot.

In addition to the top three overall victors, the guild also announced winners in six specific categories.

The BMW X3, Suzuki Swift and BMW M5 were the top finishers in their respective categories, namely Premium, Budget and Performance.

The Volkswagen Tiguan took top honours in the Family category, with BMW raking in another win, this time in the Executive class, with its new 5 Series.

Japanese manufacturer Toyota secured a win in the Adventure Utility segment with its latest-generation Land Cruiser Prado.

Last, but not least, the Mahindra XUV 3XO took the crown as the Motor Enthusiast People’s Choice Award winner.
