Location
The highway bridge/tunnel runs over and beneath the Saint Lawrence river. It connects the Canadian states of the Montreal borough of Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve with the south shore of the river at Longueuil, in Quebec.

Project Description
The Louis Hippolyte Lafontaine tunnel was opened in 1967 and is the longest underwater structure in Canada, stretching 1.5 km beneath the Saint Lawrence river.

The rehabilitation aims to improve tunnel safety, optimise traffic and promote carsharing and public transport.

The rehabilitation of the access roads will include the widening of the A20 motorway, with the addition of a new bus and carsharing lane, as well as the rehabilitation of 25 km of pavement on the A25 and A20 and an interchange.
 
The tunnel structure will be repaired and include the installation of new fire-protection facings; landscaping and architectural finishes; modernisation of all electrical, electromechanical and supervisory infrastructure; and the deployment of new technologies to increase operator and user safety (fire safety equipment and smoke evacuation systems).

Construction will be conducted between early 2021 and 2025.

Latest Developments
The Quebec Ministry of Transportation has selected the Renouveau La Fontaine consortium, comprising VINCI and its subsidiaries Eurovia (consortium leader), Dodin Campenon Bernard, and Canadian company Pomerleau (50%), to rehabilitate the tunnel and its access roads.
