Project Description
The project involves the construction of a LPG import/export terminal, with a storage capacity of 15 000 t to 20 000 t, at the Port Louis harbour, in Mauritius. Activities envisaged to form part of the project include the installation of LPG import/export pipelines; a control and administration building; a containing plant; staff offices and welfare facilities; new access roads with parking areas; services; stormwater drainage; and foul effluent collection.

The construction of the terminal will allow for the decommissioning and removal of existing storage vessels that are above ground, situated in the port.

The terminal is designed to have an operational life of 30 years, but, with appropriate maintenance and operation, it is expected to last much longer.

Latest Developments
UK-based Mott MacDonald has been named the technical adviser on the construction of the terminal. The firm will provide both technical and commercial expertise, which will see the installation of the LPG storage vessels, believed to be the largest of their kind, for mounded storage.

The 55-m-long, 15,5-m-diameter vessels will be manufactured in Europe and shipped to Mauritius, where they will be lifted onto the foundation using heavy lift technology. A mound will be built over the four new vessels (about 19 m high, 90 m in length and between 75 m and 85 m wide) and will offer greater safety levels by protecting the vessels in the event of an external fire.

The mound will also to be constructed so that any gas release or blast overpressure will be directed out to sea, away from the terminal.
