Liberated Metalworkers Union of South Africa (Limusa) intends to picket outside power and automation technologies provider ABB’s offices in Alrode, Johannesburg, on Monday, after its president Sboniso Mdletshe was allegedly illegally suspended by the company.

Limusa deputy general secretary Mawonga Madolo told Engineering News Online on Friday that the suspension was considered illegal, as it was not preceded by an inquiry from ABB.

He noted that an inquiry would, however, be launched on Monday. “It seems that the company is now looking at dismissing Mdletshe. He was served with an inquiry on September 15, where he was charged with incitement. The charge had now been changed to gross dishonesty,” Madolo explained.

His employer alleged that he committed gross misconduct by submitting union membership forms to ABB instead of submitting them to a supplier company and further alleged that he encouraged workers from these supplier companies to join Limusa.

“It is unclear how someone is dishonest when they are recruiting members,” Madolo said, adding that the union believed a rival union was responsible for the suspension.

“Our members have vowed to fight rogue employers such as ABB who are hell-bent on weakening the power of progressive unions by intimidating leaders of these unions. We stand behind our president,” Madolo added.
