JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – International shaft sinking and underground construction group Shaft Sinkers has reached a significant milestone at the Impala Platinum- (Implats-) owned Leeuwkop project, in Rustenburg, sinking the main shaft to beyond 1 000 m.

The intended final depth of the main shaft is 1 561 m.

“I am proud that our team at the Leeuwkop platinum mine has successfully reached 1 000 m, while achieving 350 days without a lost-time injury,” commented Shaft Sinkers CEO Alon Davidov.

Shaft Sinkers began shaft sinking activities at the mine in early 2012 and was, thereafter, awarded two further contract extensions in 2013.

Once at full production, the mine would produce between 160 000 oz/y and 180 000 oz/y of platinum.

Earlier this year, various media outlets reported that Implats was considering potentially introducing mechanised mining at Leeuwkop to reduce the number of people required at the mine. This was in light of the strike by Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union members at the operations of South Africa’s three biggest platinum producers.
