Large-scale near-surface iron in Cameroon - WAFM
JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – The London Alternative Investment Market iron-ore explorer West African Minerals Corporation (WAFM) has reported near-surface hematite mineralisation over a large area at its South Djadom property in Cameroon.
The company said the finding correlated well with anomalies identified in its earlier aeromagnetic and gravity survey activity.
Executive vice chairperson Brad Mills - a former CEO of South Africa-focused platinum miner Lonmin - said WAFM was “very encouraged” by the drill results, which showed hematite mineralisation and enriched banded iron formation over widespread areas.
The company reported that the drilling of 42 holes in South Djadom covered an area 3 km long and 2 km wide and that test drilling was continuing in the next 5 km2 block to the south, where field mapping indicated ongoing mineralisation.
Logistical planning to mobilise more rigs for infill drilling in the already-identified hematite areas was under way.
WAFM owns six exploration permits in Cameroon covering 6 000 km2 and five exploration licences in Sierra Leone in over 687 km2.
The company said that MSA geology head Dr Brendan Clarke had reviewed the technical information and was satisfied that the assay results reported were both accurate and precise.
The company focuses on higher-value direct shipping ore and high-grade ore and has plans for innovative quick-to-market logistics schemes for its close-to-port properties.
Some observers see West Africa emerging as the next significant iron-ore province after Australia’s rich Pilbara region.
