Name and Location
Koeberg nuclear power station steam-generator replacement project, Western Cape, South Africa.

Client
Eskom.

Project Description
The current steam generators in Unit 1 and Unit 2 at the Koeberg nuclear power station have been in operation since 1983/4 and 1984/5 respectively; as a result, Eskom plans to replace them.

This will involve the design, manufacture and installation of three steam generators in each of the two operating units, as well as the safety analyses and studies required for the replacement of the six steam generators.

The new generators will incorporate modern design features for easy maintenance and inspections and improve heat-transfer efficiency, leading to the overall efficiency of the power station.

The installation of the generators will be conducted during the scheduled refuelling, inspections and maintenance outages of the two units at the power station.

Value
Eskom has stated that the outcome of current “commercial process” will determine the total cost of the project.

Duration
Based on the lead times for the manufacture of six new steam generators, Eskom is planning for installation to take place in 2018.

Latest Developments
The winning bid to replace six steam generators at South Africa's Koeberg nuclear plant, needed to extend its life span by at least another decade, is expected to be announced early next year, Eskom has reported.

"Eskom plans to conclude negotiations and award these (generator) contracts early in 2014," says Eskom nuclear spokesman Tony Stott.

Among those who have responded to the commercial tender, announced in August last year, are Areva, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and WorleyParsons Resources and Energy. The estimated project costs range between R1-billion and R10-billion.

The installation of the new generators, to be assembled overseas and shipped to Saldanha Bay, on South Africa's West Coast, will take place during scheduled maintenance periods to minimise power supply disruptions.

Key Contracts and Suppliers
Group Five and Lesedi Nuclear Services (design, manufacture and replacement of refuelling water storage tanks).
