Electra Mining Africa offers further value-add to visitors attending industry conferences, which will be taking place alongside the trade show.

With a heritage to be proud of and backed by 46 years of experience, Electra Mining Africa is ranked as one of the largest mining shows in the world and is the biggest mining, manufacturing, electrical and power trade show in Southern Africa.

At this year’s show there will be over 900 local and international exhibitors extending across five halls and one big marquee, as well as all the outside areas that visitors can look forward to seeing. There is definitely a lot of new ideas and innovation on the floor that visitors can look forward to.

Taking place from 10-14 September at the Expo Centre in Nasrec, Johannesburg, not only will visitors have the opportunity of seeing the latest products, services and solutions, there are other visitor attractions that will also bring value to the time they spend at the show.

“There will be an exciting line-up of new products and services, live demonstrations, conferences and free-to-attend seminars at this year’s Electra Mining Africa and visitors will benefit from the insight and information they will gain,” says Gary Corin, Managing Director of Specialised Exhibitions Montgomery, organisers of the show. “New technologies and innovation are influencing the way we do business and it’s imperative that those in the industry keep up-to-date with these trends.”

Top industry speakers will present at the conferences taking place alongside Electra Mining Africa and hosted by leading industry associations the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM), the Lifting Equipment Engineering Association of South Africa (LEEASA), and Women in Mining South Africa (WiMSA).

SAIMM ASM Conference

The SAIMM ASM Conference will be taking place on the 10th and 11th of September. The theme of the conference is ‘Fostering a regional approach to ASM transformation in sub-Saharan Africa’. The conference aims to provide a platform which brings together stakeholders working in the artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) sector to share experiences and learn from each other.

Specifically, the conference seeks to expose South Africa to the successes and failures of ASM formalisation efforts as seen in other developing countries, particularly in the SADC region. In this context, this conference will endeavour to explore policy and legislative changes that would optimise the current ASM legislative framework in South Africa in line with the aspirations of the AMV to deliver on the objectives of the National Development Plan. It will also look at the implications of the future mining industry in South Africa where ASM is rejected on the one hand, and where ASM is encouraged and properly regulated on the other and used as a tool of poverty alleviation.

With South Africa being amongst the largest mineral producing countries in the world, the conference will also explore the relationship between the large-scale mining (LSM) sector and ASM sector in the country, with a view of bridging the gap between the two sectors for shared socioeconomic benefits.

Lifting Equipment Conference

The LEEASA and Lifting Africa ‘Lifting Equipment Conference’ will be hosted alongside Electra Mining Africa on the 12th and 13th of September. All players in the Lifting Industry will find this two day conference very educational and highly interactive. Delegates will have the opportunity to network with other players in the Lifting and related Industries.

Some of the topics that will be covered at the conference include: SAINT-NDT, mobile cranes, overhead cranes, tower cranes, lifting tackle SANS Standards, crane accidents, heavy lift projects, ECSA and LMI registration, and telehandlers. Experts in the various fields will present the papers, and discussion points and the answering of questions will be during the Q&A sessions. All Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) registered members will earn 2 CPD points if they attend both days of the conference or alternatively one CPD point per day attended.

Women in Mining

Women in Mining South Africa (WiMSA) will be hosting a workshop at Electra Mining Africa in support of its vision to create an empowering network to inspire, support and develop the progression of women working in the mining industry through providing access to education, skills, development, mentorship and representation. The workshop will be held on the 12th of September from 9am to 1pm at the Bateleur venue, which is close to Hall 9.

“We are thrilled to be joining forces with Electra Mining again this year for a half day workshop,” says Noleen Pauls, past chairperson of WiMSA and currently the liaison between the WiMSA committee and the patrons.  “This year's workshop is firmly aligned with providing women in the industry with tools to assist in their own career progression. Our speakers come from a broad range of mines and will share their knowledge and experience with the delegates.”

Free-to-attend seminars

Further knowledge and learning will be central to the SAIMechE hosted daily free-to-attend seminars. Information on latest industry trends will be shared and important industry issues addressed, presented by top industry speakers who are experts in their fields.

Bookings are essential for the SAIMM and LEEASA conferences and the WiMSA workshop.
