Kenya has threatened to slap visa sanctions on South Africa if the southern African nation does not relax its stringent visa rules on Kenyans.

The east African country is set to have talks with the South Africans in August to discuss the issue that has brought great displeasure to Kenyans.

South Africa last year imposed tough rules on Kenyans seeking to visit the country, with a service charge of around KES 5 850 (about R727) for applications.

Visa processing now takes seven working days with those making visits of more than a month asked pay additional KES 4 800 (about R596).

According to Kenya’s Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed, the rules will need to change if there is to be a level playing field.

“I think that we have been very lenient and supportive to visitors coming to Kenya and I would expect that we be treated the same," she said on Thursday.

Officials from South Africa will be in the country August 3 to 5 she said.

If there is failure to secure an agreement, Kenya will from September 1 2015 set up a visa charge and ask South Africans to apply online and wait for two days to get their travel documents.

At the moment, visitors from down south can get their Visas from the airport on arrival.
