Project Description
The project involves the construction of a bridge linking Botswana and Zambia over the Zambezi river to replace the existing ferry and juxtaposed one-stop border facilities at Kazungula. The project’s main components comprise the construction of a new road/rail bridge, one-stop border-post facilities and access roads at the Kazungula border.
In addition to creating job opportunities, the Kazungula Bridge project is expected to facilitate faster movement of products within the region. It will reduce the transit time from 36 hours to two hours. It will also help decrease transportation costs and the cost of doing business in general, as well as increase revenue for the two countries.
Value
$259.3-million.
The project is being financed by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the Japanese International Corporation Agency (JICA).
Duration
The project is expected to be completed in 2018.
