Name: Karviná mine.

Location: The Karviná mine is located 25 km north-east of Ostrava, in the Czech Republic.

Controlling Company: OKD, a wholly owned subsidiary of New World Resources.

Brief History: The Karviná mine was established in a merger between the ČSA mine and the Lazy mine on April 1, 2008.

The ČSA mine was established in July 1995 by merging the two previously separate mines ČSA and Doubrava.

Mining at the Lazy mine dates back to 1835 when the Vienna Rental Company started sinking the Altmaschinenschaft.

Brief Description: In 2008, the Lazy and ČSA mines were combined into one business unit named Karviná. Darkov, ČSM, ČSA and Lazy are connected through underground tunnels and by railways on the surface.

Mining Method: Longwall caving.

Products: Coking coal.

Major Infrastructure and Equipment: At ČSA, roadheaders are used predominantly to develop in-seam entries. Crosscuts and rock cutting are developed with drill jumbos and loaders. The basic coal mining method is longwall caving. Longwall sections are equipped with shield sets and shearers.

At the Lazy mine, roadheaders or drilling/blasting sets are deployed depending on underground geological conditions. Lazy Site is currently mining coal from saddle seams of the Karviná strata, from up to 6-m-thick seams, and from Poruba seams of the Ostrava strata, with seam thicknesses varying between 0.8 m and 1.5 m.

Longwall sections are equipped with shield sets and shearers in high seams and single props and plows in low seams.

Geology/Mineralisation: The Ostrava-Karviná coal basin is a part of the Upper-Silesian basin, the majority of which is located in neighbouring Poland. The whole area covers about 7 000 km2, of which only an estimated 1 500 km are in the Czech Republic. The basin comprises the territory surrounding Ostrava, Karviná, Český Těšín, Frenštát pod Radhoštěm and other towns, where coal-bearing layers of Carboniferous age are found.

In the Ostrava-Karviná region the, Ostrava and Karviná strata series are distinct. The Ostrava strata series was formed in a coastal environment and under the influence of volcanic activity and is characterised by high-quality coal in seams of smaller thickness. The younger Karviná strata series was formed after the ultimate recession of the sea.

Reserves: Total proven and probable reserves as at January 1, 2013, were 84.8-million tons, comprising 34-million tons of proven and 50.8-million tons of probable reserves.

Prospects: The development of the Karviná mine to unlock a further 30-million tonnes of coking coal by 2017 continues.

Contact Person: Chief external relations officer, Petr Jonák.
