Name and Location
Jwaneng modular tailings treatment project (MTTP), Botswana.

Client
Debswana.

Project Description
A purpose-designed MTTP is being built at the Jwaneng mine.

A substantial volume of diamond tailings had been accumulating at the mine since operations began in 1983, before the mine’s recrush facilities were introduced.

The MTTP will treat 2.4-million tons of old tailings a year and is expected to yield 18-million carats over 20 years.

This would add 900 000 ct/y.

Jwaneng produced 10.4-million carats in 2013, which was expected to increase by about another million carats in 2014.

The plant will serve as a pilot facility with the potential for deployment to other Debswana mines.

Value
The estimated capital cost of the project is $93.75-million.

Duration
Mechanical completion of the plant was expected in July and ramp-up in August 2014.

Latest Developments
Not stated.

Key Contracts and Suppliers
ADP Projects (engineering and procurement partner); Kalcon (main contractor on civils) and SMEI (main contractor on mechanical/structural and electrical and instrumentation).
Financing and operations are conducted solely by Debswana.

On Budget and on Time?
The project is currently forecast to be completed a month behind the original schedule date, owing to the liquidation of the main steel supplier.
