Project Description
An MTTP will be built at the Jwaneng mine.
A substantial volume of diamond tailings has been accumulating at the mine since operations began in 1983, before diamond recrush facilities were introduced.
The MTTP will treat 2.4-million tons of old tailings a year and is expected to yield 18-million carats over 20 years.
This will add 900 000 ct/y to Jwaneng’s current output of 13-million tons increasing it to 15-million tons a year.
The plant will serve as a pilot facility with the potential for deployment to other Debswana mines.
Value
The estimated capital cost of the project is $55-million.
Duration
Mechanical completion of the plant is expected in November and ramp-up in July 2014.

The MTTP is expected to begin initial commissioning in the next few months.

On Budget and on Time?
The project was delayed in September 2010, three months after Debswana has approved the project. Delays have centred on Jwaneng’s Cut 8 project requiring site accommodation for longer than expected and the late issuing of issue-for-construction drawings.
