Joburg Water Randburg depot to be completed by September 2023
The Joburg Water depot in Randburg is set to be completed by September 2023, 12 months after the restart of construction, the Environment and Infrastructure Services Department said on Tuesday after receiving assurances.
Work on the depot initially started eight years ago; however, the project was left incomplete after a contractor closed down in 2018, leaving the site “disused and forgotten”.
“Under the new multi-party government, Joburg Water has now appointed project managers and a main contractor that will start construction work on September 1,” says Environment and Infrastructure MMC Councillor Michael Sun.
“As part of the multi-party government’s golden repair of Johannesburg, we will ensure that this work is expedited and finished with the highest standard. We are also looking to power the buildings with green energy. The residents of Johannesburg should expect nothing less.”
The site will comprise an office block, storerooms, workshops, ablution facilities and accommodation for Joburg Water technicians and operators working overtime.
Once the depot is complete, Joburg Water will move from temporary rented property, thereby saving the entity funds that can be better used for service delivery.
“I will personally be monitoring this work to ensure it is delivered on time, to specifications and to a quality standard,” Sun concludes.
