Jobs on the chopping block at Anglo mine in Queensland
PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Mining giant Anglo American has warned that about 200 staff would be made redundant at its Dawsons metallurgical coal mine, in Queensland, leaving the operation with a workforce of about 1 200.
GM for the Dawsons mine Aaron Puna said on Tuesday that the mine would be undergoing an operational and workforce review in response to the current market conditions. The review would be targeted at a reduction in labour and contractor costs.
“The continuing low coal prices have placed considerable pressure on the profitability of the Dawson operation, so we will be implementing some necessary changes to address the current financial state of the operation, and improve productivity,” Puna said.
“As part of this, we will regrettably need to scale back some of our contractor workforce, and undertake a redundancy process which will include a portion of voluntary redundancies.”
Puna added that the process would be completed by month-end.
“The important point here is that even after this restructure, Dawson mine will still be one of the largest mines in Queensland, with a workforce of around 1 200 people,” he said.
“The review we have undertaken will help us create the right operating model for Dawson mine for the future, reducing costs, maintaining our strong focus on safety and delivering the productivity required for long-term business stability.”
The Dawson mine is an opencut operation delivering about nine-million tonnes a year of coking, soft coking and thermal coal.
