It’s our land you want – Robin Binckes
Robin Binckes discusses his book 'It’s our land you want' (Camera: Shadwyn Dickinson; Editing: Darlene Creamer)
“It’s Our Land You Want”, is the sequel to the best seller Great Trek Uncut written by Robin Binckes and which is a South African best seller.
“It's Our Land You Want” takes the reader on a vivid and colourful journey from 1852 through to 1918 and is a cornucopia of events and stories which make for riveting reading whilst also illustrating the diversity and complexity of our history.
The theme of Its Our Land You Want is repeated throughout our history as tribes fought with each other, the whites fought against each other and black a white fought each other, always about land- a contest which is unresolved and continues today.
The time span is blessed with a rich vein of stories which are described by the author in written word technicolour.
Some of the stories told are; Nongqawuse and the cattle killing which decimated the Xhosa nation; The Basotho wars; President of two countries; Sekhukhune wars; The Dorsland Trek; The Griqua Trek; Discovery of diamonds; 1st War in fight for freedom; discovery of gold; Jameson’s raid; 2nd South African War; Union of South Africa; Land Act; Birth of the ANC; Birth of the Nationalist party; Broedertwis and the Boer rebellion; Death of de la Rey; South Africa in World War I, The Mendi; Delville Wood.
Entertaining, well researched and historically accurate, this book deserves to be read by young and old as the stories and events are milestones in the growth of this country and will be with us for years to come.
