KALGOORLIE (miningweekly.com) – In response to falling iron-ore prices, junior IronClad Mining will amend its production plan at the Wilcherry Hill project, in South Australia.

The miner said on Wednesday that the Stage 1 pit would now only focus on high-grade direct shipping ore (DSO), with the starter pit expected to mine only 500 000 t over a six- to seven-month period.

This was compared with the original Stage 1 plan to mine up to one-million tonnes of DSO material.

The Stage 2 operations at Wilcherry Hill, which was targeted to produce high-grade concentrates, would also be brought forward.

The Stage 2 project had initially been expected to start by the third year of project operations, and was expected to produce some two-million tonnes of magnetite concentrate.

IronClad told shareholders on Wednesday that additional metallurgical testwork was currently under way to optimise the Stage 2 operation, and improved beneficiation was expected to result from a combination of finer crushing and dry magnetic separation.

The later stages of Stage 2 would employ a gravity separation plant.

The Wilcherry Hill project currently has a mineral resource of some 24.3-million tonnes, grading at 40% iron.
