Iron Valley gets maiden reserve
PERTH (miningweekly.com) - Developer Iron Ore Holdings (IOH) had declared a maiden probable reserve of 134.7-million tons, grading 58.5% iron at its Iron Valley project, in Western Australia.
The ore reserve estimate was based on a mineral resource of 259-million tons, with a mining study revealing that some 90-million tons of the probable ore reserve had an average grade of above 60% iron, which would allow for a high-grade mining approach, if required.
The current economic case for the project assumed a mine-gate sale concept, with the proposed mine plan leading to the development of three pit areas.
IOH said that the state government’s Department for Environment had now approved the implementation of the Iron Valley above-water-table mining project, allowing for the mining and processing of some five-million tons a year from above the water table.
The applications for secondary approvals, including the Department of Mines and Petroleum mining proposal, the Department of Environment and Conservation works approval, and the Department of Water licences, have started.
The approvals were targeted for completion by the third quarter of this year, which would make the Iron Valley project development ready.
IOH has previously secured a Native Title land access deed and federal environmental approval for the project.
Iron-ore major Fortescue Metals recently pulled out of the joint development of the Iron Valley project, citing a diverging development focus following the recent market volatility, and an agreement that Iron Valley's and Fortescue’s Nyidinghu project would not be developed as an integrated mine in the timeframe originally contemplated.
