JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Impala Platinum (Implats) would, on Tuesday, hold a safety awareness mass meeting with senior members of the company and trade unions after reporting that four employees have died at its Rustenburg operation since work restarted after the five-month strike.

The platinum miner said the latest fatality had occurred on September 5, prompting the miner to suspend underground operations for two days to mourn the loss of colleagues and to “re-double efforts in prioritising” health and safety initiatives.

Implats spokesperson Johan Theron said workers would resume work on Wednesday.

Implats stated that management was investigating the fatalities and reviewing safety initiatives and plans.

“Unfortunately, these recent accidents are a clear sign that a significant amount of work and effort, as well as improved levels of leadership, and cultural transformation are still required to ensure that the strategy is achieved.

“Management will continue to actively engage all key stakeholders including employees, union leaders and representatives of the Department of Mineral Resources in a collaborative effort, to ensure that the zero harm vision is realised.

“This will include how Implats drives critical safety behaviours aligned to major hazards as included in the safe production rules that the group introduced two years ago,” the platinum miner said in a statement.

The company noted, however, that the two-day stoppage would not affect the planned production of 250 000 oz of platinum during the six months to December 31.
