JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – JSE-listed Impala Platinum (Implats) has decided not to sell its Marula operation, in Limpopo, and plans to improve the performance of the operation instead.

The platinum miner announced in February that it would sell Marula, as part of measures to conserve cash.

However, following a “thorough assessment” over the last quarter, Implats’ board resolved that enhanced shareholder returns would best be obtained by focusing on strategic interventions to optimise performance at the operation, including through a reduction in operating costs and growing output to 90 000 oz/y of platinum.

Marula produced 78 500 oz of platinum in the 2014 financial year.
