Name of the Project
Hydrogen Energy Supply Chain (HESC) project.

Location
Gippsland, in Victoria, Australia.

Project Owner/s
The project is a collaboration between Japan and Australia and includes Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Electric Power Development Co, Iwatani Corporation, Marubeni Corporation, AGL Energy and Sumitomo Corporation. ENEOS Corporation and Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha are involved in the Japanese portion of the project Royal Dutch Shell.

Project Description
The JV aims to produce clean hydrogen from Latrobe Valley coal with carbon dioxide (CO2) capture, utilisation and storage. The project will take advantage of one of several long-term CO2 storage solutions, including using the depleted oil and gas reservoirs in Bass Strait for the CO2 emissions that cannot be used.

The project will initially produce between 30 000 t/y to 40 000 t/y of gaseous clean hydrogen. A future potential production of 225 000 t/y would eliminate about 1.8-million tonnes a year of CO2 from being released into the atmosphere, equivalent to the emissions of about 350 000 petrol cars.

Potential Job Creation
Not stated.

Capital Expenditure
A$2.35-billion.

Planned Start/End Date
Subject to commercial agreements and meeting the required environmental permits and approvals, hydrogen production is expected to start in the late 2020s.

Latest Developments
None stated.

Key Contracts, Suppliers and Consultants
Japan’s J-Power and Sumitomo Corporation Joint Venture (preferred hydrogen provider).
