Name of the Project
Huguenot tunnel north bore project.

Location
Western Cape, South Africa.

Projects Owner/s
South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral).

Project Description
The 4 km Huguenot South tunnel reduces the distance between Paarl and Worcester, in the Western Cape, by 11 km and eliminates a climb of about 500 m over the steep Du Toitskloof Pass.

Owing to safety concerns, the construction of the north bore at the Huguenot tunnel has become essential.

The proposed twin-tunnel operation will make maintenance easier, reduce the impact of an accident or a fire, and will allow for better traffic control.

The bidirectional tunnel will be on par with some of the world’s safest and most advanced road tunnels.

Capital Expenditure
R2.5-billion.

Planned Start/End Date
The project will take five to seven years to complete.

Latest Developments
The consultant tender for the upgrade of the north bore, which involves bringing the second tunnel online, is being evaluated.

Key Contracts, Suppliers and Consultants
None stated.
