Homelessness on the Streets of Jozi – A Documentary
The Jesuit Institute South Africa presents its first short documentary film highlighting the ministry and services offered to the homeless people of the inner city of Johannesburg at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Braamfontein. For many years members of the Braamfontein Conference of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul have run a soup kitchen from the local church, as part of their ministry to provide relief to the inner-city’s poorest, offering food, clothing and other assistance to those who live on the streets.
Additionally, in an initiative by the medical and pharmacy students from the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand in partnership with the Holy Trinity community, a primary healthcare service under the name of Trinity Health Services runs from the Church where a clinic was built for this purpose.
The services offered at the clinic include consultations with student doctors, ably supervised by qualified medical professionals, and also an on-site pharmacy dispensing free medicines run by student-pharmacists under supervision. The clinic is open on a bimonthly basis, every second Monday evening, at the same time that the weekly soup kitchen is run. The documentary, a film by the Jesuit Institute’s media team, Sr Katleho Khang and Francis Tuson, intends to highlight the plight of those who live on the streets, allowing them to tell their stories and also show the incredible work being done by volunteer students and parishioners with the poorest of this inner-city population.
