International law firm Herbert Smith Freehills is promoting Ernst Müller to director, with effect from May 1.

Müller, who joined the firm as an associate in 2017, is a senior associate based in the firm’s Johannesburg office in South Africa.

He is one of the firm’s main contact persons responsible for environmental, social and governance (ESG) across Europe, Middle East and Africa (Emea).

Owing to a background in environmental sciences, his practice focuses on the laws that govern the exploitation of natural resources, sustainable development and ESG-related matters.

He is experienced in environmental, labour, mineral and petroleum, administrative and Constitutional, international and general commercial law.

In addition to advising clients on the law, he also represents them in negotiations, transactions, judicial review proceedings and dispute resolutions. His clients include governments, local communities, nongovernmental organisations and multinational organisations.

“Ernst is uniquely placed to advise clients on ESG-related matters by bringing together his skills as an environment scientist and as a lawyer. He is able to bridge the gap between the increasingly complex universe of ESG rights and specific obligations, technical expertise and in-depth industry knowledge.

We are delighted to recognise his hard work, commitment and contribution – congratulations Ernst!” managing partner Herbert Smith Freehills Johannesburg Jean Meijer says.

“I am incredibly pleased to be promoted to director and am excited as I continue to grow my practice and support clients in navigating the hurdles in their ESG journeys. I am grateful to work with such talented and supportive colleagues across the global network,” says Müller.

Mülle is recognised as a green ambassador by Legal 500’s Green Guide Emea and a Rising Star in Legal 500’s Mining South Africa categories.

Globally, Herbert Smith Freehills is promoting 33 new counsel and one professional support consultant across the firm.
