Vereeniging-based nondestructive testing (NDT) equipment provider GammaTec NDT Supplies is currently introducing the SciAps Z-200 C+, which is the only hand-held analyser on the market capable of analysing carbon content in alloys, to the African market.

GammaTec is the official distributor for instrumentation company SciAps in Africa.

The equipment analyses carbon content in carbon and stainless steels using the technique of a hand-held laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy. It analyses carbon content in steels, down to 0.007 parts per million for dependable separation of L and H grades, and carbon steels, including carbon equivlents for weldability.

The analyser uses a pulsed, 1 064 nm laser, operating at a 5.5 mJ/pulse and 50 Hz repetition rate. The onboard spectrometer spans from 190 nm to 620 nm. A dedicated high-resolution spectrometer spans the 192 nm carbon range. The analyser also uses an on-board, user-replaceable argon purge gas. The argon canister, located in the handle, provides about 125 to 150 carbon analyses before replacement is required. For general alloy analysis, the argon canister lasts 600 tests.

GammaTec chief sales executive Marco González highlights that four units have been sold to NDT contractors doing maintenance for a large petrochemicals company in Mpumalanga, while two units have been sold to an Angolan NDT contractor for onshore and offshore applications.

“GammaTec is looking to promote this new technology into South Africa and Africa and we are training dedicated staff to offer a professional and comprehensive service to industry,” he concludes.
