Name of the Project
H2Teeside project.

Location
Teesside, in north-east England, in the UK.

Project Owner/s
bp.

Project Description
bp plans to build the UK’s biggest blue hydrogen production facility, targeting 1 GW of hydrogen production by 2030.

Blue hydrogen is produced by converting natural gas into hydrogen and carbon dioxide, which is then captured and permanently stored. H2Teesside would be integrated with the region’s already-planned Net Zero Teesside and Northern Endurance carbon capture use and storage projects.

The project will capture and send up to two-million tonnes of carbon dioxide a year for storage, equivalent to capturing the emissions from the heating caused by one-million UK households.

The project will be developed in stages, with an initial 500 MW of blue hydrogen capacity expected to be in production by 2027, and additional capacity to be deployed by 2030 as decarbonisation of the industrial cluster and hydrogen demand gathers pace.

Potential Job Creation
Not stated.

Capital Expenditure
Not stated.

Planned Start/End Date
A final investment decision is expected in early 2024, and could begin production in 2027 or earlier.

Latest Developments
bp has begun a feasibility study on the project to explore technologies that could capture up to 98% of carbon emissions from the hydrogen production process.

Key Contracts, Suppliers and Consultants
None stated.
