GreenH2Atlantic project, Portugal
Name of the Project
GreenH2Atlantic project.
Location
Sines, in the south of Portugal.
Project Owner/s
The project will be developed by a consortium comprising EDP, Galp, Engie, Bondalti, Martifer, Vestas Wind Systems, McPhy and Efacec, and academic and research partners, such as ISQ, INESC-TEC, DLR and CEA, together with public–private cluster Axelera.
Project Description
GreenH2Atlantic involves the development of a 100 MW electrolyser to produce green hydrogen from new fields of renewable electricity.
The hydrogen plant, located in the EDP coal-fired power plant being decommissioned, aims to decarbonise hard-to-abate industries, such as the Petrogal refinery, and “greenifying” the existing natural gas network operated by REN through the injection of renewable hydrogen.
The electrolyser will comprise innovative, scalable and fast-cycling 8 MW modules to overcome bottlenecks such as efficiency, size, lifetime and flexibility.
Other innovative features include the interface system, consisting of an advanced management system, which is required to allow for the project’s direct connection to a local hybrid renewable power plant (solar and wind).
