Government has welcomed a pledge made by Business Unity South Africa (Busa) to support the implementation of the National Development Plan (NDP), as the country enters its second term with Jacob Zuma as President.

“A high degree of collaboration between business and government is needed for the NDP’s success. The pledge by Busa is a step in the right direction to realising the 2030 vision,” acting Government Communication and Information System CEO Phumla Williams said in a statement.

“Government alone cannot achieve this vision, and calls on all sectors of society to support its implementation, as it is the responsibility of all South Africans. This is the country’s blueprint and not only government’s initiative,” she remarked.

Government’s comments came a day after Busa acting CEO Cas Coovadia called on Busa members and the private sector at large to support the State in its implementation and roll-out of the NDP.

“What we need to do now is engage with government and put the ‘hard’ structural issues facing the economy on the table [so that they can be solved]. The NDP is a tool for this,” he said at a seminar, in Johannesburg, adding that government now needed to identify concrete ways to implement the strategy.

The NDP, which was embraced by Parliament and endorsed by Cabinet, is the country’s 20-year growth and development framework to bolster the economy and address unemployment, poverty and inequality.
