Govt on track to implement biometric solutions at airports
The directive regarding the letter issued in lieu of an unabridged birth certificate, which formed part of the contentious new visa regulations, had been relaxed, Department of Home Affairs (DHA) director-general Mkuseli Apleni said.
The letter used to be issued to applicants who had not received their certificates within eight weeks of the travel date, and would now be issued immediately upon request by clients owing to the urgency of travel, irrespective of the time when an application had been lodged.
Speaking at a stakeholder engagement on the visa regulations and the inter-Ministerial Committee’s findings on the ‘Unintended Consequences of the Migration Regulations’, Apleni said the DHA was making progress in the development of systems for biometric capturing at ports of entry.
The DHA intended to implement biometrics systems during a pilot project at the OR Tambo International Airport, in Johannesburg; the King Shaka International Airport, in Durban; and the Cape Town International Airport.
“For countries where no South African missions exist, the DHA will accept applications sent by post. Thereafter, the biometrics and photos of those travelers will be captured at ports of entry,” he said.
Further, he highlighted that, although transit visas were not new, there was a need to attend to it given the concerns raised. “Accordingly, we will remove this requirement once biometric capturing is in place,” he said.
