Tea manufacturers and labellers need to be made aware of government’s recent prohibition on the use of certain Rooibos trademarks. Norton Rose Fulbright South Africa head of IP Brian Wimpey says there have long been calls for South Africa's traditional terms and expressions to be preserved and protected. He says that an overlooked alternative means of protecting Rooibos is via a “certification mark” similar to what was done for “pinotage”.

Wimpey speaks to Polity.org.za in a video interview about government’s recent prohibition on the use of certain Rooibos trademarks.
