GOLD STILL TRUMPING PLATINUM

17th August 2012

For some time in the now distant past the gold and platinum prices seemed inseparable as a twinning. Then platinum, buoyed by its far more numerous industrial uses, pulled far away from gold and bullion seemed to have no chance of catching up. But the tables have been turned for what seems like yonks, with gold lording it over its struggling precious-metal cousin. While the pundits are tipping gold to move into the $1 700/oz range, pessimists see platinum again falling below the $1 400/oz mark to open the gap even wider. With the Olympics keeping racing on the world’s minds, on the precious-metals front yellow is getting further ahead of white, to the detriment of the South African economy.
