Gold Fields appoints Baku to head up W Africa region
JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – South Africa-headquartered Gold Fields on Tuesday announced the appointment of Alfred Baku as senior VP and head of its West Africa region, effective August 1.
Accra-based Baku, who will also join the group executive committee, is currently VP of operations for the West Africa region, and will become the first Ghanaian to head up the JSE- and NYSE-listed group’s presence in the region.
He has been with the group for over 19 years, having first joined the Damang gold mine, in Ghana, in 1997 as production engineer and, thereafter, becoming a member of the operation’s senior management team in 2002.
In 2005, he occupied the positions of strategic mine planner at the group’s St Ives mine and relieving mine manager at the Agnew mine, both in Australia.
Three years later, he became the first Ghanaian to be appointed as GM of Damang. After being appointed GM of the group’s Tarkwa mine, also in Ghana, in 2010, Baku was promoted to VP for both the Tarkwa and Damang operations.
He holds an MSc degree in Mining Engineering from the University of Mines and Technology, in Ghana, as well as a Statutory Mine Manager’s certificate.
CEO Nick Holland said he was “delighted” to announce the appointment.
“Alfred brings a strong continuity, technical depth and leadership to our operations in West Africa and has well-established relationships with our key stakeholders. Our West African operations are a key component of our portfolio of assets and Alfred is well suited to lead this region into the very challenging next phase of its development,” he commented.
