Global steel production rises 3.3% y/y in October

Global crude steel production, as reported by the 65 member countries of the World Steel Association (worldsteel), increased by 3.3% year-on-year to 136.5-million tons in October.

South Africa’s crude steel output rose by 13.8% year-on-year to 534 000 t in October, while Egypt lifted its production by 17.4% year-on-year to 380 000 t.

China’s crude steel production increased 4% year-on-year to 68.5-million tons, while Japan’s output increased by 0.6% to nine-million tons.

India produced 12.3% more steel year-on-year, at 8.3-million tons, in October.

In the European Union, Germany’s production contracted by 3.7% year-on-year to 3.5-million tons, while Spain’s output decreased by 10.5% year-on-year to 1.2-million tons.

Italy produced 2.1-million tons of steel, an 11% year-on-year increase.

Turkey’s crude steel production increased by 8.6% year-on-year to three-million tons.

Russia produced 5.9-million tons of crude steel, up 2% year-on-year, while Ukraine’s output fell by 6.1% year-on-year to 1.9-million tons.

US steel production decreased by 2.5% year-on-year to 6.4-million tons and Brazil’s output by 8.8% to 2.7-million tons.
Worldsteel notes that the crude steel capacity utilisation ratio of the 65 countries was 69.6% in October, compared with 68.2% in October 2015 and 70.2% in September.
