Global steel output rises 3.4% y/y in August

World crude steel production was 156-million tonnes in August, which was a 3.4% increase compared with August last year.

Global industry organisation, the World Steel Association (worldsteel), reports that China produced 87.3-million tonnes of crude steel in August, which was a 9.3% year-on-year increase.

Japan produced 8.1-million tonnes of crude steel, which was 7.8% lower year-on-year.  

South Korea’s production was 5.9-million tonnes of crude steel in August, which was 2.6% lower year-on-year. 

Germany produced 3.3-million tonnes of crude steel in August, which was up 0.8% year-on-year, while Italy produced 900 000 t, down 26.7% year-on-year.

France produced 1.1-million tonnes of crude steel in August, which was 11.2% more than August last year. Spain also produced 1.1-million tonnes of crude steel in August, down 4.6% year-on-year.

The US’s steel production increased by 0.3% year-on-year to 7.5-million tonnes, while Brazil’s production fell by 13.4% year-on-year to 2.5-million tonnes.

Turkey’s crude steel production for August was 2.6-million tonnes, which was 12.4% lower year-on-year.

Crude steel production in Ukraine was 1.9-million tonnes in August, up 8.5% year-on-year.

Africa’s steel production decreased by 14.6% year-on-year to 990 000 t. South Africa’s production fell by 17.8% year-on-year to 434 000 t, while Egypt’s output fell by 13.3% year-on-year to 525 000 t.

Libya produced 31 000 t of steel in August, a 19.3% year-on-year increase.
