Global mobile subscriptions are nearing the eight-billion mark, with steady 3% year-on-year growth recorded by the second quarter of 2019, a new report by information and communication technology giant Ericsson shows.

The latest ‘Ericsson Mobility Report’ shows mobile subscriptions exceeded 7.9-billion in the second quarter of 2019, with a net addition of 60-million subscriptions.

China is driving the growth, with more than 13-million mobile subscription additions, followed by the Philippines with 12-million and Nigeria with four-million.

Overall, global mobile subscription penetration has now reached 104%.

Mobile broadband subscriptions expanded 11% to 6.1-billion, with long-term evolution (LTE) subscriptions increasing by 170-million to a total of 3.9-billion, accounting for nearly 50% of all mobile subscriptions.

WCDMA/HSPA subscriptions contracted by 40-million during the quarter to June and GSM/EDGE-only subscriptions reduced by 60-million.

Other technologies decreased by about ten-million.
