Global crude steel production increases 1% y/y – worldsteel

World crude steel production for the 64 countries reporting to the World Steel Association (worldsteel) was 146.7-million tonnes in January – 1% higher year-on-year.

China’s crude steel production for January was 75-million tonnes, an increase of 4.3% compared with January 2018.

India produced 9.2-million tonnes of crude steel in January, down 1.9% year-on-year. Japan produced 8.1-million tonnes of crude steel in January, down 9.8% year-on-year, while South Korea’s output decreased by 1.5% year-on-year to 6.2-million tonnes.

In the European Union, Italy’s crude steel production for January was two-million tonnes, down by 3.6% year-on-year.

France produced 1.2-million tonnes of crude steel in January, a decrease of 9.7% compared with January 2018, while Spain produced 1.2-million tonnes of crude steel in January, an increase of 5.9% year-on-year.

The US produced 7.6-million tonnes of crude steel in January, an 11% year-on-year increase.

South Africa’s crude steel output, meanwhile, decreased by 9.6% year-on-year to 521 000 t in January.
