The 6th Automechanika Johannesburg trade fair takes place from 18-21 September 2019 at Johannesburg Expo Centre, Nasrec. The event will once again be co-located with Futuroad Expo, sub-Saharan Africa’s leading professional event for the truck, bus, and commercial vehicle industry and Scalex Expo which focusses on transport systems, infrastructure and logistics.

This year’s event is set to be bigger than ever before with over 600 exhibitors from 28 different countries as well as over 15 industry focussed conferences running alongside the show. View the list of conferences HERE. The organisers have also focussed on introducing free skills development seminars and interactive areas. Most importantly it is free to attend for all trade visitors.

Since the first show was staged in South Africa in 2009, the number of exhibitors and visitors to the biennial Automechanika Johannesburg trade fair has grown. Scalex Expo

Bringing the automotive aftermarket and truck & bus sectors to Southern Africa

These events service the entire sub-Saharan region and after an increase of 80% in visitors from African countries in 2017, the organisers have made a big thrust into Africa to attract more visitors from the sub-Saharan region.

Road shows were conducted to present the event and the benefits of attending to countries such as Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Namibia, Mozambique and Botswana. This has resulted in a number of buyers from across sub-Saharan Africa committing to attend the show.

Strong focus on Innovation and skills development

A big draw card for this year’s event is the major focus on skills development. There will be a free to attend, 4-day programme aimed at sharing knowledge and enhancing skills. This comes as part of the organisers strategy of building a strong support platform for all aspects of the automotive aftermarket in South Africa. Go HERE to view the Skills Development Programme.

Another sub-theme is Honouring Innovation. Every second year, dozens of products are entered into the Automechanika Johannesburg Innovation Awards competition. The products are deemed by their manufacturers or distributors to incorporate innovative qualities that make them game-changing from an OE or aftermarket perspective. The task of deciding which are truly pioneering and worthy of top honours lies in the hands of a pre-selected jury. Following two rounds of assessment – which includes physical examination of the products – the jury will decide which items they perceive to be the most innovative. The winners will be announced at the event and all the finalist’s products will be on display for visitors to view.

Interactive areas and competitions

There will be a variety of interactive elements including an all new virtual reality zone where visitors can explore the latest technological advancements through VR.

The “Pressure” is on to find the tyre changing champ of South Africa. The competition will be held at Automechanika Johannesburg and entry is free to anyone who is an employee of a registered Tyre Dealership business. The competition will begin with a training session on the use of equipment and accessories, health & safety, tyres & fitting procedures. Competitors will race against the clock according to set accuracy and detailed criteria. Winners will receive up to R60,000 in prizes. Go HERE for more info.

The first Body & Paint Championship for workshop professionals is being launched at 6 Automechanika shows around the world and South Africa is one of the competing countries. Entrants are required to present a bonnet with a design related culturally to South Africa. A jury will select the national event winners at the local Automechanika event. Finalists will receive SATA spray-paint guns (worth over R10,000) and national winners will travel to Frankfurt for the grand finale from 8-12 September 2020. Go HERE to find out more.
