Glencore must give locals a look-in for jobs at Collinsville coalmine

The CFMEU has called on mining giant Glencore Xstrata to employ local mineworkers when it
reopens the Collinsville coalmine in North Queensland.
As revealed on last night’s ABC 7.30 program, Collinsville locals fear the Swiss-based multinational will deny them the opportunity to work at the town’s century-old mine when it reopens, after the entire workforce was sacked at the end of August. CFMEU District President Stephen Smyth said Glencore would break the spirit and the economy of Collinsville if it continued to lock locals out. “Collinsville is a pioneering mining town. It will have no future if there are no mining jobs,” he said.
“It will be devastating for Collinsville if Glencore continues to deny locals from working at the mine that has sustained the community here for several generations.” This week the CFMEU responded to Glencore’s enterprise agreement deadline, rejecting the company’s push to reclassify the historic mine as a greenfield site, allowing it to reduce entitements and conditions. Mr Smyth said it was time the company acknowledged the current workforce and their existing enterprise agreement. “When Glencore this week took over a majority stake at the Clermont coalmine, also in the Bowen Basin, the company treated that as a business transfer and honoured the exisiting agreement – why is Collinsville different? “Jobs at the Collinsville mine are the lifeblood of the local community and we’re calling on Glencore to respect that and ensure the viability of the town.”
