Background and year of formation:
Glencore is one of the world’s largest global diversified natural resource companies and a major producer and marketer of more than 60 responsibly sourced commodities that advance everyday life. The Group's operations comprise around 150 mining and metallurgical sites and oil production assets.
With a strong footprint in over 35 countries in both established and emerging regions for natural resources, Glencore's industrial activities are supported by a global network of more than 30 marketing offices.
Glencore began marketing activities in South Africa in 1974, and mining in 1988. Glencore has a strong presence in both the coal and ferroalloy sectors in South Africa and is a major contributor to the local, provincial and national economies.
Glencore is the leading producer of thermal coal which is intended for the domestic and export market and their coal operations are located near eMalahleni, Middelburg and Belfast in the Mpumalanga province. Glencore Ferroalloys is one of the world's largest integrated ferrochrome producers. The chrome and vanadium operations are located across the mineral-rich Bushveld Complex of South Africa's North West, Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces.

Company mission, products and services:
Glencore is dedicated to improving people's lives by providing the commodities required to grow, sustain and enhance the world we live in. The Group is committed to responsibly and ethically deliver the commodities that are basic to the building blocks of life through the scope and diversity of their industrial and marketing operations.
Glencore continues to bring advancement to many people by collaborating with communities and governments. Whether it is to construct critical infrastructure such as houses and hospitals, as well as roads and rail networks, or to manufacture the batteries that are changing contemporary technology and transportation, or to guarantee that everyone has access to affordable energy.
Glencore's customers are industrial consumers, such as those in the automotive, steel, power generation, battery manufacturing and oil sectors. We also provide financing, logistics and other services to producers and consumers of commodities.

Number of people employed:
Glencore's companies have employed around 135 000 people, including contractors. In South Africa, Glencore has almost 27 000 employees and contractors.

Greatest Corporate achievement:
Glencore in South Africa is fueled by the intent to Progress Together and has been working closely with communities near their operations and assisting community members with skills development, training, education and healthcare, and linking them to procurement opportunities where it is feasible.
From building a state-of-the-art clinic to the value of over R30-million, providing e-learning at schools and free WiFi through approximately 53 hotspots, to donating over R23-million towards Covid-19 relief efforts in 2020, Glencore prides itself in making a meaningful and lasting impact in the lives of the people within its communities.

Hope for the Future:
Glencore is committed to bringing long-term growth and opportunity to all their stakeholders. These include our employees, local communities, suppliers, partners, customers and shareholders.
In South Africa, Glencore aims to ensure that the communities and environment surrounding their operations are healthy, resilient and prosperous long after work has ended. This is not only an ethical imperative for business, it is also critical to South Africa’s long-term growth and success. It is the very definition of operating sustainably, which so heavily influences the way we work.
